Forgiveness
Matthew 6:12

2002-09-01

Even on the hills and fields desolated by the wars of mankind, flowers and grass return in spring to heal the devastation. It is nature's way of forgiving man's destructive actions. Just look at the landfill area around the Sang-am World Cup Stadium where the World Cup soccer games were held. The landfill where the trash and waste of Seoulites was buried has become a beautiful park. Nature forgives the environmental destructive actions of mankind to bring forth new life. In a similar way, forgiveness is the source of power that brings new life. In the Lord's Prayer, Christ commands us to pray for forgiveness on a daily basis.

Forgive your neighbors. A hit-and-run driver ran a red light and sped through the intersection, killing a lady's daughter and granddaughter while they were crossing the street. Although the lady was first filled with thoughts of outrage and revenge, she later forgave the man. Harboring hatred leads to a mental, physical, and even a social breakdown. If we do not forgive people of their sins, our Heavenly Father will not forgive our sins (Matthew 6:14,15). A father shot and killed the man who raped his daughter. Although he experienced temporary relief, his hatred continued to boil until he had a complete breakdown. Jesus told us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:43,44; Ephesians 4:31,32). Forgiveness is not a choice; it is God's command.

God forgives us. He came to this world to save us, not to condemn us (John 3:16,17). When a woman was caught in adultery and the teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought her to Jesus and questioned Him, Jesus said, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her" (John 8:1-11). No one picked up a stone. Jesus did not condemn her either but said, "Go now and leave your life of sin." Christ paid for our sins and has provided repentance and forgiveness for us (2 Corinthians 5:21). When we repent, God forgives us (1 John 1:9,10).

Forgive yourself. There are those who persecute themselves saying, "I'm a failure. I'm wicked. I'll never succeed." Three times in the courtyard of the high priest, Peter denied knowing Christ, and then he mired in self-hatred for. Later on in Galilee, three times Jesus Christ forced Peter to say he loved Him. Jesus forgave him. Then Peter could forgive himself (John 21:15-17). Half of the mental patients who are hospitalized wouldn't be there if they could forgive themselves. Jesus forgives us. Let us forgive our neighbors and ourselves. Deep-rooted hatred, grudges, despair, and self-abuse make life negative and miserable. Such bitterness can only be healed through forgiveness.

Heavenly Father, forgive us of our sins. Help us forgive our neighbors and forgive ourselves.
