The Law, Love, and Human
Romans 8:1 ~ 8:4

Where there live humans, there is the law. Whether it was passed down orally or written, the law lubricates human relations and keeps societies just and fair. Adam was degraded and brought to punishment for he violated the law God gave to him and Jesus was crucified for our sins.

1. The first law given to Israel after the Exodus

1) Moses went up to the mountain Sinai and returned with stone tablets on which the commandments God Himself gave to humans were written.

2) The 10 commandments were comprised of 4 commandments regarding the relationship between God and humans and 6 commandments regarding relationships between humans.

3) These commandments are the basic rules and regulations with which the people of God can establish a nation and live harmoniously.

2. The relationship between the law and human

1) The law is for humans, not that humans live for the law.

2) The contents of the law are about God's love toward humans.

3) If the law disregards and abandons humans, the law becomes an idol.

3. The law with God and the law without God

1) The misfortunate who was robbed, shed blood, and abandoned on street, the priest and the Levite who were the executors of the law, and the good Samaritan

2) Without God, the law itself is like an idol.

3) Though the Samaritan had not the law, he was the servant of God for he had the love of God.

4. The relationship between human and the law that Jesus showed

1) The Sabbath and humans

① On a Sabbath, Jesus' disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands, and eat the kernels. The Pharisees accused of them being unlawful. Jesus said, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."

② The Jews who made judgment on Jesus' healing the sick on another Sabbath.

- One shall not heal people on the Sabbath even though they become sick to death (Sabbath becomes an idol).

Healing the sick should come first before keeping the Sabbath.

2) The woman caught in the scene of adultery and the teachers of the law who wanted to stone her

① God wants humans to realize that an adultery is a sin and to repent through the law.

② "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her."

③ Those who condemned her felt guilty and went away.

④ Jesus said, "Then neither do I condemn you. Go now and leave your life of sin."

3) The true meaning of the law is to help humans realize and repent of their sins.

- The purpose of the law is not to condemn and judge but to have humans realize and repent of their sins so that they can be saved.

- To realize the true meaning of the law, one must look to the cross.

- The purpose of the law is God's love in that He loves us to the point where He bore all the sins and inequities of us by the law and died in our stead to save us.

Without love, the law is an idol in itself. No one can be saved through the law. The law makes us realize and repent of our sins so that we can be saved through faith in Jesus and by grace. The Law is good. But it becomes a lethal weapon when it does not contain love. Knives are tools of murder in war but they are also cooking utensils and scalpels for medical operations. The same knives hold different meanings according to their purpose of use. The Laws is the same. If we use it without the love of Christ, it is mere tool of condemnation, judgment, and death. If we use it with the love of Jesus, however, it becomes a great tool of grace with which we can realize our sins, believe in Jesus, and receive salvation.
