You Worm Jacob
Isaiah 41:14 ~ 41:16

2002-08-04

On a hot summer day, I discovered an earthworm wriggling on the ground. It was on the verge of death under the hot sun. It was only 15 meters from a shade tree, an impossible distance. I thought, You poor little worm. You are dying, but I will save you. I put it in the shade, and it found life. I realized that although I may be helpless and poor much like that worm, if God helps me there is hope in every situation.

Jacob was not a worm from the start. He and his twin brother Esau were even fighting in their mother's womb. The Lord explained to her, "Two nations are in your womb . . . one people shall be stronger than the other; the older shall serve the younger (Genesis 25:22-26). Jacob the trickster was born clutching his brother's heel. He bought Esau's birthright with a bowl of stew (Genesis 25:31-34). Jacob deceived his aged father by pretending to be his brother Esau; he took away the blessings of the first-born son (Genesis 27:27-30). He had to escape because Esau was ready to kill him.

Jacob took refuge and worked in his uncle's house for 20 years. He took Leah and Rachel as his wives, the two daughters of his Uncle Laban, and served him with all of his might for 14 years (Genesis 29:18-28). Uncle Laban cheated Jacob out of six years of labor after that. So when Laban had gone off to shear his flock, Jacob took his family and the flock that were striped and spotted to escape to Canaan to his father Isaac (Genesis 31:17-22). After seven days, Laban and his men caught up with them, Laban confronted Jacob, and they made a covenant (Genesis 31:50-52).

Jacob became a worm. While he and his family and cattle were on their way back home, Jacob sent messengers to tell Esau they were coming. The messengers returned saying that Esau and 400 men were on their way to kill Jacob (Genesis 32:6). Jacob trembled in fear (Genesis 32:7-12). He prayed with all of his heart, knowing they were facing certain death. His last trick was to send his family and belongings ahead across the river, thinking if Esau killed them first, he could escape. While alone, he wrestled with a man and Jacob's hip was dislocated (Genesis 32:24-28). The trickster Jacob became helpless like a worm, and asked to be blessed. His name was changed to Israel.

"You worm Jacob, I will help you"(Isaiah 41:14). Like a powerless worm, Jacob was completely helpless as he limped along to face his brother Esau who was ready to kill him. Jacob had to trust God. The Holy One of Israel helped him (Isaiah 41:15,16). The 20-year-hatred in Esau's heart melted away when he saw Jacob (Genesis 33:1-4). It was a miracle! God had answered Jacob's prayer, and Esau forgave Jacob (Proverbs 16:7).

Heavenly Father, all of us are like Jacob-cunning and deceitful. Help us to surrender all of our deceitful ways and become powerless so You can help us.
