Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
By His Grace Through Faith
Ephesians 2:8 ~ 2:9

2002-07-28

A Christian asked me to explain the difference between God's Law and grace. I explained rather simply that obedience to God's Law is man's attempt to serve God through his deeds, while grace is serving God through dependence on Christ's help. Since the fall of mankind, no one has been able to live in full obedience to God's Law through any human effort. Everyone breaks God's Law, becomes a sinner, and is judged. Jesus Christ is God but came as a man in order to redeem mankind from all sin and his inability to serve God. One becomes righteous only through faith in Christ.

Oh, what a wretched man that I am! Paul, a great apostle of faith, realized the inability of self and that he had two forces working within him: the desire to open his heart to God and the fact that his body worked against him (Romans 7:15,22-24). We all experience this. Man thinks he can achieve righteousness, holiness, and perfection through his own efforts of discipline, penance, education, and training, but this is impossible! God's Law contains the 10 commandments and over 600 other laws. Only a perfect being could keep all of them. But no human being is perfect (Romans 3:10-18). Through the Law comes the knowledge of sin (Romans 3:19,20; Isaiah 64:6).

Through Christ, we must give thanks to God! He knew that mankind could not overcome sin and save himself, so He sent Jesus Christ to represent fallen, powerless mankind. Christ took man's punishment on the Cross, redeeming him from his powerlessness. Through the Cross, Christ was victorious on our behalf (Colossians 2:12-15). We have a new identity; we have been made alive in Christ (Ephesians 2:1-7). The old man in his fallen state has become a new person in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). Because of Jesus' eternal sacrifice on the Cross, by believing in Him we can confidently stand before Him. The new man lives by the grace of God. Grace means having complete trust in God and depending upon Him to guide us in life.

For by grace you have been saved through faith (Ephesians 2:8,9; Romans 3:23-30). God bestows His grace upon mankind through Christ as we live with the power of the Holy Spirit through faith in Christ. It is not by our deeds but by His grace through faith that we are forgiven and made righteous (Romans 8:1,2), and receive power to live holy lives (1 Corinthians 6:11). It is not by our deeds but by His grace through faith that we are healed of sickness (Isaiah 53:4,5), and freed from the curse and poverty (Galatians 3:13,14). It is not by our deeds but by His grace through faith that we are victorious over death and hell and receive eternal life in heaven (John 11:25,26).

Heavenly Father, help all people to realize that their lives are based on Your grace through faith.
