Do Not Put the Lord Your God to the Test
Matthew 4:7

2002-06-09

When a farmer buys an ox, he tests it to see how well it can plow the soil. When a man buys a horse, he tests it to see how fast it can run. When a person applies for a job, his personality and abilities are tested. Throughout history, people have tested God (1 Corinthians 10:9). But can man test God? How can the created test the Creator?

The Israelites put God to the test. Those who came out of Egypt had experienced many miracles. Moses threw a branch in bitter water and it became sweet. When crossing the desert, God daily provided manna and quail from heaven for the three million Israelites to eat. Later, they tested the Lord saying, "Is the Lord among us or not?" (Exodus 17:7). They spoke against God and Moses, complaining about the food. So, God punished them and sent venomous snakes that bit them; many died (Numbers 21:4-6).

Balaam was a foreign prophet (not an Israelite) who put God to the test. The Israelites had traveled to the land of Moab, and the Moabites were filled with fear because of the many powerful Israelites in their land. King Balak of Moab sent messengers to Balaam asking him to come to Moab to curse the Israelites. God told Balaam not to go, not to curse the Israelites because they were blessed (Numbers 22:12). The greedy prophet was told he would receive a great reward if he cursed them. So, three times Balaam tested God, praying He would change His divine plan. When Balaam finally went to King Balak, he could only speak God's words of blessing on them (Numbers 23:7-12).

Satan tested Jesus Christ after He had fasted 40 days and nights. We read in Matthew 4 where Satan tested Jesus, three times challenging His divinity, whether He was really the Son of God. There is no need to test this; God said that Jesus is His Son (Matthew 3:16,17). How do people test God? They ignore Isaiah 56:2 and say, "Why not worship God at home or go on a picnic?" They don't tithe, to see if it is really necessary (Malachi 3:10). However, tithing has nothing to do with material blessing; it has to do with our faith in God and obedience to Him. Some people test God by sinning (1 Corinthians 3:16,17). God will destroy people who destroy His temple.

Why must we never test God? To test God is to imply that He doesn't keep His Word (Numbers 14:22,23). God is our loving Creator, faithful in all He does (Psalm 33:4). He does not lie; He keeps His promises (Numbers 23:19). Increase your faith in Him through the Word (Romans 10:17). We must never put the Lord our God to the test.

Heavenly Father, we know that You loved the world so much that You sent Your Son Jesus Christ. Every word from Genesis to Revelation is true. Help us not to test You but to trust You. If we have sinned by testing You, forgive us of our sin.
