Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
Conflict
Romans 7:14 ~ 7:25

2002-06-02

When our church was located in Bulgwangdong, a joyful sister in Christ came to early morning prayer meeting every day and to the service every Sunday. One day she told me, "I plan to retire from believing in Jesus Christ." When I asked her why, she replied, "Before I was a Christian, I could mark up my prices when selling my products on the street. But now that I'm a Christian, my painful conscience won't let me deceive my customers."

What is the reason for conflict? Initially, conflict arose within Adam and Eve when they sinned against God; their conscience bothered them. Because of sin in this world, people have weak consciences (1 Corinthians 8:7-12), hardened consciences (1 Timothy 4:2), filthy consciences (Titus 1:15), and guilty consciences (Hebrews 10:22). A good conscience replaced with wickedness causes great trouble, such as child abuse and even death. Only the power of the blood of Jesus Christ and faith in Him can heal and renew a good conscience. Love comes from a good conscience (1 Timothy 1:5). Goodness brings peace and harmony. We must hold on to a good, clear conscience (1 Timothy 1:19; 3:9) that helps us serve God and others (2 Timothy 1:3).

We have an outer man and an inner man-a fleshly nature and a spiritual nature-with different desires. There is no conflict if we are not filled with Christ. But when we become Christians, our conscience is revived and sensitized. Through prayer and reading the Bible, the Holy Spirit gives us a good, clear conscience. It is the fleshly nature that Satan attacks. The law within us is in conflict with our outer man. Our conscience tries to pull us back on the right path. Those who live with acts of the fleshly/sinful nature will not inherit the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:19-21). We need new attitudes (Ephesians 4:23,24). However, like the apostle Paul, we want to do good things, but we keep doing what we don't want to do (Romans 7:18-24).

How should we live a life of faith to overcome conflict? Let us remember that Jesus has won the war over sin; we are made holy in Him (Hebrews 10:12-14). His work of redemption is complete (John 19:30). However, Christians will always be in a battle-a conflict-against the evil forces in this world (Ephesians 6:12). Therefore, we must live as children of light and find out what pleases the Lord (Ephesians 5:8-10). Let us grow in faith and mature in Christ (Ephesians 4:13). When we have Christ in us, we can expect to experience conflict because of our clear conscience controlled by the Holy Spirit. That means He is at work within us, and we can be victorious through Him.

Heavenly Father, there will always be a battle between our outer man and inner man. Through Your Word and prayer, help our good conscience to grow and mature so
it can come alive and continually guide us in righteousness.
