Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
I Will Give You Rest
Matthew 11:28 ~ 11:30

2009-02-22

28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

Introduction: God proclaimed the Sabbath by saying, "Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest." There is keen competition in the complex industrial society. In order to survive, people work seven days a week without rest. We must take a rest to prevent us from getting sick, just as we would oil a machine to keep it from breaking down. (Are you greater than God?)

1. All you who are weary and burdened.
1) A spiritual burden is heavier than a physical burden.
¨ç The burden of sin—the pain of condemnation.
¨è The burden of a corrupt mind.
¨é The burden of suffering from disease.
¨ê The burden of the curse of life—the burden of meaninglessness and emptiness.
¨ë The burden of death and meaninglessness—the burden of despair.

2. Come to me.
¢Â Jesus is (Isa 32:2).
1) A shelter from a hurricane—the hurricane of trouble from the world strikes us (Northeaster), (Pr 1:27; Ps 50:15; 46:1-3; 23:4).
2) A refuge from the storm. When God executes the judgment of wrath upon the nations
(Heb 9:27; Jn 3:17).
3) Streams of water in a desert.
- No living creature can live in a desert. Jesus gives hope and life where there is no hope and life (Jn 4:14; 14:6).
4) The shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land.
- A traveler who is exhausted and about to fall can rest under the shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land.
Jesus is a resting place for those who have become weary and lost courage from the harsh journey of life (Isa 40:31).

3. I will give you rest.
¢Â How to enter into Jesus' rest:
1) We must be gentle and obedient in heart (Ps 37:11; Heb 5:8-9).
2) We must be humble in heart and rely on Him (1Pe 5:6-7; Pr 3:5-6).
3) Take my yoke upon you and learn from me.
¨ç Enter into the yoke of the cross of Jesus and learn to be gentle and humble (Phil 2:6-8).
- A calf takes a mother's yoke upon him, and they plow a field together.
¨è Jesus' yoke is easy and our burden is light.
- Jesus carries all our burdens, because the yoke is on His shoulder, and we are just resting under His yoke (Ps 55:22; 68:19).

Conclusion: Every person grows tired and weary, because this world is filled with fear, terror, anxiety, and depression. However, when you come to Jesus, learn of His grace and rely on Him, your mind and life will have rest.
