Forget What is Behind
Philippians 3:13 ~ 3:16

2001-05-28

Wherever people live, it is natural for trash to accumulate. It must be cleaned out. Mental trash can gather in our hearts and minds. Our mental trash must be cleaned out as well; we must know what to get rid of and what to forget.

What are the things we should forget? Sin does not go away by itself, and it separates us from God (Isaiah 59:2). Therefore, we must clean it out through repentance so God can forgive us (1 John 1:9). Hatred is like a computer; it can bring up the past. But we should forget about hatred and never bring up past issues -especially among family members and friends (Proverbs 10:12). We should forget about past failures and despair (Proverbs 24:16) and past fears (John 14:27). We must also forget about great achievements so we don't become proud and revel in them, but depend upon God continually.

What are the goals before us? We should always have goals. We are taking a step toward death day by day (1 Peter 1:24-25; Philippians 3:20). Where will we spend eternity? Our primary goal should be to love God and seek first His kingdom and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33). We must pray and read the Bible on a daily basis (Philippians 4:6; Hebrews 4:12). Another daily goal should be to love our family and spend time with them. We should help our suffering neighbors. We should choose to take care of nature and be proud of our nation. To conserve is to love our country; we should conserve water and electricity. South Korea is 30 percent Christian so as good examples we should be able to change our nation and influence society.

What is the prize for us who are in Christ Jesus? We can expect His leading in our lives, joy, and eternal pleasures (Psalm 16:11) as well as abundance in our houses (Psalm 36:8). We will receive a crown of life (James 1:12), a crown of righteousness (2 Timothy 4:8), a crown of glory (1 Peter 5:3-4), a crown of gold (Revelation 4:4), and an imperishable body (1 Corinthians 15:41-42). Jesus said, "Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done?(Revelation 22:12).

Heavenly Father, help us to forget our past ?the bad and the good, and focus only on our goals, the righteousness of Your kingdom, and receive Your reward in heaven.
