Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
Hell and Heaven
Luke 16:19 ~ 16:31

2008-02-03

Introduction: If we talk about hell and heaven, intellectuals may burst out laughing and call us an ignorant or primitive person. People might say, "Are you from the olden days? Look at the advancement of human knowledge and science." However, we must not condemn them so easily. In the natural, it would be an absurd thing if we said to our eyes, "Why can´t you hear?" or if we said to our ears, "Why can´t you see?" Human knowledge and science will never understand anything beyond the material and mental world. We can only understand the spiritual world by the spiritual things God reveals to us. Therefore, we can only understand knowledge about hell and heaven through the Bible, which is the word of revelation from God.

1. Life in this world and life in the next world of a rich man and Lazarus
    (Lk 16:19-25).

2. What is hell like?
    - Just as a baby in a mother´s womb will never understand the world approaching it,
we can hardly understand the spiritual world approaching us. That is why the Bible
uses parables to describe life in the next world. We cannot adequately describe it
       with words.
    1) Hell is a place of absolute disconnection.
¨Ø People will never meet God.
¨è Communication with neighbors is in vain. It is full of emptiness    (Lk 16:26).
    2) Hell is a place of absolute despair. Time is suspended, and there is no hope for
tomorrow or for the present; there is only eternal despair    (Lk 16:23-24).
    3) In hell, people try to commit suicide because they feel disgusted and doomed,
but they cannot die    (Mk 9:48-49).
    4) In hell, people cannot repent or regret because their heart is closed    (Heb 6:6).
    5) Indescribable pain of desertion    (Lk 16:27-28; 2Th 1:8-9).
    6) Life exists in eternal pain
        - All of these descriptions are too superficial to explain hell, a terrifying place
           (Rev 21:8).

3. What is heaven like?
    - Heaven exists within Jesus. No matter how many flowery words we may say, there
       is no heaven without Jesus.
    - Because of this, the more we reach out to Jesus, the more we will experience
heaven. We can experience heaven right here.
    1) Heaven overflows with justice and holiness    (Ps 20:6; Rev 21:10).
    2) Heaven is a place of endless peace    (Rev 14:13).
    3) Heaven is a place of endless joy where there is no sorrow or suffering
       (Rev 21:3-4).
    4) Heaven only has light. No darkness will ever exist    (Rev 22:5).
    5) Heaven is extremely beautiful and harmonious    (Rev 21:2).
    6) Heaven overflows with love    (Rev 22:3-4).
    7) Heaven is always fresh    (Rev 21:1, 5).
    8) Heaven is full of the river of the water of life    (Rev 22:1-2).
    9) Heaven is a world under the Cross.

Conclusion : I cannot adequately explain hell and heaven, but I have tried my best. The apostle Paul explained his heavenly experience in 2 Corinthians 12:2-4.
