The Door of the Open Tomb
Matthew 28:1 ~ 28:7

2002-03-31

A closed door gives no hope; there is no exit. But an open door gives hope. We can exit through an open door.

The door of Jesus' tomb has been opened. Two thousand years ago Jesus died on the Cross. The chief priests and the Pharisees made certain that Jesus' tomb was secure so the disciples couldn't steal His body and tell people He had been raised from the dead (Matthew 27:62-66). When Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to the tomb, an angel of the Lord had rolled back the stone that had been in front of the tomb. The angel told them that Jesus was not there; He had risen from the dead. They quickly went to tell the disciples (Matthew 28:5-7).

When Adam and Eve fell from grace, their sin closed the beautiful door of Eden and opened the door to the world (Genesis 3:22-24). The price of sin was the tomb of death - where we live now (Ezekiel 18:20; Romans 5:12). In this tomb that we were born into are the cravings of a sinful nature (Ephesians 2:3). In this tomb, there is spiritual illness that results from not knowing God (Jeremiah 2:19). In this tomb, we suffer from the curse (Galatians 3:10), and we are slaves with no hope because we are separated from Christ (Ephesians 2:12). No one can help us. Philosophy, science, nor technology can help us escape from the tomb of sin.

Jesus Christ - the only one who can help us - has opened the door of our tomb (John 3:16). He was despised and rejected by men, and He was persecuted for us (Isaiah 53:1-3). He died on the Cross, taking our sin, sorrow, and punishment, and provided forgiveness of sin and healing (Isaiah 53:4-12). His death and resurrection provided freedom for us (Romans 4:25; 6:22-23; Colossians 2:12-15). A Muslim and a Christian were going to Mecca and to Israel. The Muslim said to the Christian, "I'm going to visit the tomb of Mohammed and view his body. It's too bad that you cannot see the body of Jesus when you visit His tomb." God brought victory through the resurrection of Jesus, opening the door of the tomb for us! Because Jesus Christ came out of the tomb, we can be released from our tombs; Christ has set us free (Luke 4:18-19). We can go out of the tomb of sin (John 8:34-36) and carnal desires (Galatians 5:24; 1 Peter 4:1-2). There is no reason to stay in the tomb of disease (Acts 3:6,16; 10:38) and the curse (Galatians 3:13-14). We are freed from the tomb of death (John 11:25-26; 1 Corinthians 15:51-53). Don't sit in the tomb looking at the open door; come out! Enjoy your freedom in Christ (Hebrews 10:19-25).

Heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ You have opened the door of the tomb of sin and made new life possible for us. Help us to repent of our sins, and enter
into the Garden of Eden You have prepared for us.
