Introduction : An explanation of John 4:1-30


1. A woman at the well in Sychar
    - A woman who tried to find the meaning of life and happiness in her circumstances
    1) A rich businessman    (Ecc 5;10-12, Lk 12:15)
        (1) Pressed by time    (2) Pressed for money    (3) Troubled by human relationships
        (4) A life of work
    2) A politician
        (1) A lost private life    (2) The capricious mind of people    (3) Endless competition
            (Ps 146:3-4)
    3) A scholar
        (1) Married to learning    (2) A poor life    (3) A different world of conversation
            (Ecc 1:18, 12:12)
    4) A farmer
        (1) Physical labor    (2) Worries about producing and selling    (3) A rough body
            (Ps 127:1-2)
    5) A fisherman
        (1) An unusual change in weather    (2) Anxiety    (3) The uncertainty of harvesting
            (Pr 27:1, Ps 38:8)

2. A life that has abandoned the happiness of life
    1) Her sixth husband - she came to draw water during the day    (Jn 14:16-19)
    2) Life and despair
        (1) The despair of a guilty conscience and condemnation    (Ps 38:4, Jer 2:19)
        (2) The despair of emptiness and meaninglessness    (Ps 39:6, Pr 14:13, 1Pe 1:24)
        (3) The despair of death and nonexistence    (Ps 89:48, 90:4-5, Heb 9:27)
    3) She looked for happiness "over the mountain" (tried hard to find happiness),
        but could not find it (Jn 4:10, Am 8:11)

3. Well water and living water    (Jn 4:13-14)
    1) If we drink the well water of the world, we will get thirsty - a broken cistern

    2) Happiness found from within    (Jn 4:24-26)
        (1) Jesus who is the source of life    (Jn 14:6, 1:4)
        (2) The living water of the Fivefold Gospel
            (Jn 7:37-39, Eph 2:4-5, Isa 33:6, Jer 31:12, Rev 21:6)
        (3) Like the light, water on a dry land, and living water for the thirsty
            (Isa 32:2, 44:3, Rev 7:15-17)


Conclusion : When the woman at the well in Sychar realized that Jesus was the Messiah, she was instantly changed from within.
