Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
Barabbas
Matthew 27:20 ~ 27:31

2002-03-24

The great Russian writer Dostoyevsky faced execution because of his work during the revolution; miraculously he survived. Barabbas faced execution; he was pardoned.

What kind of person was Barabbas? He was a criminal, a murderer who had been arrested by the Romans. He was in prison waiting for his death on a cross, an execution that meant terrible suffering. Then an unimaginable thing happened; Barabbas was released from prison and set free. He must have wondered, "Who took my place on the cross?" He must have seen Jesus carrying a cross and being nailed to it; Jesus had taken his place on the cross. That happened 2000 years ago.

All of us are a 21st century Barabbas. Because of Adam and Eve's sin (Romans 3:23), we have been given a death sentence. The bars of sin that keep us locked up in our prison cells are made from our worldly desires, the curse, and disease. But just as Christ took Barabbas' cross, He became our substitute and died on the cross for our sins. Jesus Christ opened our prison cells of sin and disease by providing forgiveness and healing (John 3:16; Romans 8:1,2; Isaiah 53:4-8; 1 Peter 2:24). A deacon was dying of lung cancer. Doctors couldn't help him; chemotherapy couldn't help him. But his Christian family prayed, and Jesus completely healed him of all growths and the effects of cancer! Jesus Christ has opened our prison cells of worldly desires so we can love God (1 John 2:15,16). He opened up our prison cells of the curse by providing redemption and blessing (Galatians 3:13,14; 2 Corinthians 8:9). He has released us from the fear of death by overcoming death (Hebrews 2:14,15).

Do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free (Galatians 5:1; John 8:32; 2 Corinthians 3:17; 5:14,15,17; John 8:36). We must know what freedom Christ has provided for us, and through faith we must turn these facts into reality (John 5:24; Romans 5:8-9). We must continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise (Hebrews 13:15). "So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness" (Colossians 2:6,7). Jesus Christ has opened all of our prison doors. "You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light" (1 Peter 2:9).

Heavenly Father, help us understand that Christ had to suffer for us to free us from our prisons of sin, disease, the curse, worldly desires, and the power of death. Help us not to take on the yoke of slavery again but to enjoy the freedom You have provided for us.
