Waiting
Psalms 123:1 ~ 123:2

2002-03-10

In Korean history, women are always waiting. They wait on their parents, and then they wait on their husbands. As Christians, we must also live a life of waiting ?waiting on God for His will and His timing.

Wait for God's will and timing. God promised Abraham that Sarah would have a son, but he did not wait for God's timing. He took Hagar as his concubine and Ishmael was born (resulting in the Middle East conflict). Later, God blessed Abraham and Sarah, and Isaac was born. He was offered as a sacrifice to God. Because of Abraham and Isaac’s great faith and obedience to God, He spared Isaac's life. Jacob waited 20 years for the will and blessing of God. Joseph was a slave and in prison for 13 years until God's will was revealed. Moses killed an Egyptian and was in the desert 40 years, learning how to wait on God (Psalm 123:1-2).

Some have lost a blessing because they wouldn't wait for God's timing. Moses was on Mt. Sinai, waiting for God to give him the Ten Commandments. Back at the camp, the Israelites couldn't wait for him to return, and they made an image of a golden calf and began worshipping it (Exodus 32:15-19). When the Philistines were assembling at Micmash, Saul couldn't wait for Samuel. He offered a burnt offering, something only a high priest could do. God would have established Saul's kingdom over Israel for all time - if he had waited as God had commanded (1 Samuel 13:11-14).

God's grace has already provided some things for us, and it is not necessary to wait for them. We can receive the blessing of salvation now (Romans 3:23-24). We can receive the gift of the Holy Spirit now (Acts 2:38-39). We can receive healing now (James 5:14-16). We can go to heaven now (2 Corinthians 5:8). We can receive God's good gifts now (Matthew 7:7-11; 11:12). We can ask for the blessing of Abraham now (Galatians 3:13-14).

What should we wait for? We should wait for God's will to be revealed; time is needed for God to work in us (Jeremiah 33:2-3; Psalm 130:5). How are we to wait? We must wait patiently for His great secrets to be revealed (Psalm 40:1; 130:5). A farmer can't harvest his crops as soon as he plants seed; he must wait for it to grow (James 5:7-8,11; Psalm 55:22). God will open and close doors to our future (Isaiah 22:22); Proverbs 16:1,9). Wait! God wants to nurture us during the waiting process. In His timing - not ours - He will make His will known to us.

Heavenly Father, there are some things we must wait for, such as knowing Your will. Help us to wait patiently for Your will and timing so our lives can be fruitful and blessed.
