Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
A Wind of Hurricane Force Called the Northeaster
Acts 27:9 ~ 27:26

2002-03-03

The apostle Paul was preaching in Jerusalem and was arrested. He was in the custody of a centurion who was taking him to Caesar to be judged in Rome. They were crossing the Mediterranean when at Crete, Paul told him they should stop sailing because there was going to be a great storm. But they continued to sail and met a great wind of hurricane force, the northeaster, taking a violent battering from the storm. Paul shared his revelation of hope from God, that none of them would be lost.

The God to whom I belong gave Paul a message of hope. We all need to belong to someone or something . . . to have an identity. Some people find it psychologically painful when they don't have a business card to give to others. Korean children living overseas continually wonder about their roots, their biological parents. We know to whom we belong; we are sons and daughters of God through faith in Jesus Christ (John 1:12-13; Galatians 3:26). We are the Bride of Christ (Revelation 19:7), and we have heavenly citizenship (Philippians 3:20). We belong in our Father's house (John 14:2-3). The God of heaven is our refuge and fortress (Psalm 91:2-6).

The God whom I serve gave Paul a message of hope. The prayers of his shipmates had failed because they prayed to false gods. But the living God whom Paul served answered his prayer with a message of hope. Some serve gods of pleasure, entertainment, power, or money; their lives are worthless. Whatever we serve determines how we will live. All of us will face storms in our lives. Let us determine to serve God no matter what the circumstances may be (Ecclesiastes 12:13). Let us worship and praise Him with devotion and loyalty, give of our tithes and offerings, and give of our time in serving Him (Romans 12:2; Colossians 3:16-17).

We can receive a message from God when we face the great storms of life because of the God to whom we belong and whom we serve. When the storms of sin and condemnation try to capsize our ship, God will give a message of hope and strength to those who call out to Him (Romans 8:1-2). God has rescued us from the storms of darkness (Colossians 1:13; 1 Corinthians 6:11). He has rescued us from the storms of illness (Isaiah 53:4; 1 Peter 2:24) and poverty (2 Corinthians 8:9). God's message of hope to us is of eternal life and victory (John 6:40; 1 Corinthians 15:55-57).

Heavenly Father, we know we will face many great 'northeaster' winds in life;we cannot escape them. Help us to believe firmly in You, to know that we belong to You, and to hear Your messages of hope.
