The God Who Works Behind the Scenes
Romans 8:33 ~ 8:39

2005-01-23

Introduction : One day I saw an ant on the run looking for food. So I put a grain of rice right in front of this ant. It was so happy to find the food and started to drag it away. But after a little while, another ant came and tried to take the food away from the first ant. I used a pen to push the second ant away from the food. The first ant probably thought he did this by his own strength, and the second ant probably thought that he was pushed away because the first ant was so strong. But in fact, I was the power behind the scenes. People who reach the age of forty feel that some great power works behind the scenes, and that determines their destiny.

1. The power behind the scenes that determined the fate of Israel
    1) The decisive battle at the Red Sea
        (1) An elated Pharaoh and his army (Ex 14:5-7)
        (2) The Israelites faced a hopeless and desperate situation (Ex 14:11-12)
    2) The power behind the scenes decides destiny (Ex 14:13-14)

2. The power behind the scenes is manifested through prayer (Ex 17:10-13)
    1) A war by proxy
        (1) The Amalekites were an army of the devil
        (2) Joshua led an army of God
        - The Korean War was a war by proxy between the communists of the Soviet Union
and the free world. It was an internecine war, and it was also a war between
           democracy and communism. (Ro 12:19)
    2) The prayer of Moses and the results of the battle (Jer 33:3, Ex 17:15-16)

3. God determines our steps (Pr 16:1, 9)
    1) The destiny of Joseph and the outstretched hands of his brothers (Ge 37:3-4, 8)
    2) The destiny of Joseph and the Midianite merchants (Ge 37:18-20, 28)
    3) The destiny of Joseph, Potiphar, and his wife (Ge 39:9. 20-21)
    4) The destiny of Joseph and his prison life (Ge 40:21-23)
    5) The destiny of Joseph and King Pharaoh (Ge 41:14-16, 39-41)
        (Ge 50:16-21, Ro 8:28, Pr 16:33, 3:16-17)

Conclusion : The life of humankind is always anxious, because we are surrounded by uncertainty, and we cannot predict the future. We have no strength to solve all the problems we will face. However, we can live a life with strong faith and peace of mind when we realize that our God is working behind the scenes for us. (Romans 8:33-39).
