Spiritual Warfare
Ephesians 6:12 ~ 6:17

2002-01-20

Lucifer was the first one to wage spiritual warfare (Isaiah 14:12-25). He was a great angel who fell from heaven because he wanted to make himself like God. Since that time, Satan continually confronts mankind with spiritual warfare and misery.

The spiritual warfare of Adam, the first man, was waged in the Garden of Eden where Adam was to work the garden and take care of it, but he was not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:15-17). Rather than use a wild animal to tempt Eve, Satan came to her in the form of a crafty serpent (Genesis 3:1-5). Adam and Eve disobeyed God, ate the forbidden fruit, were defeated in spiritual warfare, and became captives to evil (Genesis 3:6-7).

Jesus Christ came to fight against spiritual warfare since Satan attacks all mankind. Jesus opened Himself to the temptations of Satan to win over them. After Jesus fasted for 40 days and nights and was hungry, Satan tempted Him to tell the stones to become bread ?if He were the Son of God (Matthew 4:2-4). Satan tempted Jesus with glory (Matthew 4:5-7). Matthew 4:8-10 records how Satan tempted Jesus to become the most powerful. In all three temptations, Jesus replied by quoting the Word of God, and the spiritual warfare of Satan failed. Jesus did not enter into temptation because He stood on the Word of God and “the devil left him?(Matthew 4:11). We must stand on the Word of God during spiritual warfare, or we’ll become prisoners of Satan. During Jesus?three years of ministry, there were continual satanic attacks. But Jesus healed all who were under the power of the devil (Matthew 8:16; Mark 9:25-27; Acts 10:38). Satan still brings evil to our homes and society today.

We need full armament for victory. We must use every piece of God’s armor to guard and protect ourselves against Satan’s tricks and strategies so we can stand firm and victorious during spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:12-17). We must wear the belt of truth and the breastplate of righteousness to cover and protect our bodies. We must put on the Good News of peace and wear it like shoes on our feet because Satan will try to use our intellect and rationale to trap us and lead us into false teaching (1 John 4:4-5). Trust only the Bible. We need to wear the shield of faith to extinguish the flaming arrows of Satan, and use the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit ?the Word of God (Hebrews 4:12), in spiritual warfare against Satan. On the Cross, Jesus triumphed over Satan (Colossians 2:15; Luke 10:18-19).

Heavenly Father, Satan always confronts us with spiritual warfare, trying to rob, steal, and destroy us. Help us to stand firm on your Word and become victorious.
