A Plus Life and a Minus Life
Romans 8:28

2002-01-13

Some people always see life as a minus, one of deficit, and live in the red ink of life. Others see life as a plus and live in the black ink of life. What kind of thoughts and attitudes do we have toward our environment and situations? Is the bookkeeping account of our lives recorded in black or red ink?

God does not create a hard-pressed life. He created the Garden of Eden for Adam and Eve; everything in it was good. But Adam turned his ear to Satan (John 10:10), and chose to sin against God. Blessing turned to deficit; all of mankind was inflicted with a minus life. Eve had pain in childbirth, Adam had to toil and sweat, conflict between family members began, and a minus life began in relationships. Because of sin, a plus life in God had turned into a life minus blessings.

Let's look at the hard-pressed life of the Israelites in the desert. Did they have to keep looking on the minus side of life? Twelve spies were sent to Canaan and returned after 40 days (Numbers 13:25-29). They reported that the land truly flowed with milk and honey. But ten with a negative attitude disbelieved in God's covenant, and they chose to focus only on the powerful people and the large fortified cities in Canaan. The Israelite spies who spread the negative report about Canaan were struck down and died of a plague (Numbers 14:36-37). Disbelief in God's covenant is living a minus life. Joshua and Caleb (Numbers 14:30) knew that God had promised the Israelites the land of Canaan, were the only two who believed in His covenant, believed they could go and take possession, and they entered Canaan.

Is your life in the black or in the red? When we accept Jesus Christ and His salvation through the Cross, healing, heaven, and many blessings are added to our lives (2 Corinthians 5:17; John 7:37-38; Psalm 16:11). We can change a minus life to a plus life and face the storms and difficulties of life with hope (Hebrews 11:1). Storms actually help the ocean become better oxygenated so the fish can live better. When the wind blows across the land, it strengthens the roots of trees. The storms of life can also add value. We always have hope in God (1 Corinthians 2:9; Philippians 4:19) because of His promise, "that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him" (Romans 8:28). We must make a determination: will we choose to live a plus life or a minus life?

Heavenly Father, Christians should never have a negative mind. You have prepared a great life for us. Help us to always have a positive attitude in our relationships and circumstances, and be filled with hope, joy, and energy.
