Facing the New Year with an Open Heart
Proverbs 4:20 ~ 4:27

2002-01-06

As we look back upon the old year, we think about dreams that were not accomplished. But then we become excited as we look toward the New Year with new hopes, new dreams, and new expectations. How can we prepare our hearts to receive all the new things that will fill them?

We must prepare for the New Year with a heart filled with hopes and dreams, and our lives will be filled with energy. The foundation for all our hopes and dreams must be based on Jesus Christ and the Cross (Hebrews 12:2). Forgiveness of sins, healing, and all blessings come from Him (Psalm 103:1-5; 3 John 1:2).

We should have a firm resolve to prepare for the New Year with steadfast prayer. The widow kept going to the judge with the plea to grant her justice against her adversary until he finally agreed to see to it that she got justice (Luke 18:1-5). We should pray with the same determination day and night, without giving up (Hebrews 10:36).

We need to face the New Year with positive and active attitudes. In John 6, Jesus asked Philip where to buy bread for the crowd of 5,000, and Philip gave a negative answer. But Andrew had a positive attitude when he referred to the boy with five loaves and two small fish, and through the help of Jesus they fed 5,000! Positive, active people are creative, productive, and they are willing to try new things.

We need to prepare for the New Year with faith (Hebrews 10:35-39), and accept God’s Word as our source book for life. To believe in the Bible is to believe in miracles (Romans 8:28). A deacon with heart disease had three surgeries and needed another; he could only walk two meters. He went to Prayer Mountain and during prayer, he heard a voice telling him to run. He had a surge of energy and ran to the top of Prayer Mountain. He found out that he was still all right. He went to the doctor for a checkup; his heart deformity was healed! Unimaginable miracles still happen.

The New Year must be a year of practicing love (1 Peter 4:8). We must learn to forgive ourselves as well as others. Husbands should give at least one hug to their wife every day ?a vitamin of happiness. At least once a day, wives should make their husband laugh, give him a big smile, and praise him. “Love protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres?(1 Corinthians 13:7). Practicing God’s love is the basic answer to life’s problems (Romans 12:14-17).

Heavenly Father, the New Year has come upon us. Help us to have joy and readiness of heart and practice Your love.
