Man is Destined for Hardship
2 Corinthians 4:16 ~ 4:18

2001-12-09

Hardship - no one likes it. When we pass through the tunnel of hardship, we suffer from doubts, despair, and tears. We may even turn away from God or look at others and question, "Why me?" Everyone thinks his or her hardship is the worst.

We should not be surprised when we encounter hardship. We will all face hardship. Why? God created the Garden of Eden for mankind, a place of peace and beauty - a paradise. But the first man Adam rebelled and sinned against God (Genesis 3:17-19). We are all descendents of Adam, the man who brought hardship on all of us because of his sin (Romans 5:12). Even Jesus suffered hardship with His death on the Cross.

Jesus brings victory! He is our source of salvation (Hebrews 5:7-9; Colossians 2:15). Jesus did not come to remove hardship but to give victory over it. We must arm our minds and hearts to overcome hardship when it comes at us like a storm. When waves hit the rocks on a beach, the waves seem to swallow up the rocks. But when the water recedes, the rocks are still firmly in place. We can stand firm during hardship by feeding on the Gospel of peace. It is easy to become emotionally and psychologically weak when suffering hardship, but we have God on our side. Our faith has made us righteous, not our actions (Ephesians 1:7; 2:8-9). We can be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power - if we put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-17). We can overcome through the knowledge of His Word and the help of the Holy Spirit. All of us have received a measure of faith (Romans 4:17). Satan may try to discourage us and take away our faith. So we must stand upon God's covenants (Romans 8:37); God does not break them. He will give us power to overcome our enemies (Luke 10:19). A spiritual war may take time to overcome. If we fall, we must stand again. We must recognize Satan's weapons of despair and disappointment, and stand firmly on the promises of God (Romans 8:31-32, 37).

When we struggle with hardship, we must realize that we need help. The Holy Spirit has been given to us just for the purpose of helping us (Romans 8:26). He intercedes for us and carries us on His back to support us (Isaiah 41:10-11). We can be strong because of the knowledge that the Holy Spirit is with us. No one else can be strong for us (2 Corinthians 5:7; Joshua 1:9). We must have faith in God, not limit Him by trying to understand Him with our senses. God will never abandon us (Hebrews 13:5-6; James 1:2-3; 5:13; Jeremiah 33:3).

Heavenly Father, on this earth we cannot escape hardship. Thank You for the power to overcome hardship so it will become a blessing, which helps us grow in faith.
