Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
A Neighbor to the Person who Falls into the Hands of Robbers
Luke 10:30 ~ 10:37

2001-12-02

A legalist (an expert in the Law) asked Jesus, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" When Jesus asked him what was written in the Law the legalist replied, "Love your neighbor as yourself?(Luke 10:25-27). Then he asked Jesus, and who is my neighbor?" Jesus told him a story about a man going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, who fell into the hands of robbers and was stripped of his clothes, beaten, and left half dead (Luke 10:30).

A priest passed by the robbery victim, too proud to stop and help him. A legalist, like pastors, deacons, and elders today, the priest knew the Law, but would rather judge the victim for making the wrong decision to travel on that road (Romans 12:15-16). In the book of Job, Job's friends reprimanded him. At that moment, Job didn't need others to scorn or judge him; he needed love and comfort - not a lesson (Matthew 9:12-13). Pastors so easily judge others, forgetting to show love and mercy. Judgment without mercy is a terrible thing (James 2:13). If a husband or wife is a legalist at home, they see only the wrong things one does. If parents are legalists, they see only the wrong their children do, and the children don't want to stay home.

A Levite also passed by the robbery victim but ignored him because he was selfish and felt he had a duty to carry out in the temple. We must have concern and care for our neighbors who need help. A one thousand won offering may be small, but when each of us gives this small offering consistently, together we are able to support 300 churches in the countryside. We must not judge or condemn our neighbors but be merciful to them (Galatians 6:10; Luke 6:36-38).

It was a good Samaritan of the lowest social position who took pity on the robbery victim; he did not judge or ignore him. He was a true neighbor who showed mercy, kindness, and love (Luke 10:34-35; 1 Corinthians 13:13). We must love with actions and in truth (1 John 3:17-18; Psalm 112:9; 1 Peter 4:8). This is the kind of care we show through Elim Welfare Town to young men and women and to the elderly. Many of our mission groups and the NGO in our church help our neighbors around the country and overseas. Matthew 25:34-40 tells us the kind of neighbor we should be. Are you a priest who judges or a Levite who ignores those who need mercy and care? Or are you a good Samaritan who stops and cares for those around you?

Heavenly Father, at times we scorn or ignore those around us who need help.

May we become good neighbors and provide love and mercy with what we have.
