The Story About Love
Romans 8:38 ~ 8:39

2001-11-25

It is recorded in the Bible that God loves us. His love is endless and immeasurable.

God's love is unconditional. He redeemed the Israelites from the land of slavery because He loved them (Deuteronomy 7:7-8). He loves us, not because we are perfect; He loves us because we are His children. Do we deserve God's love? No! But He chose us because He loved us (John 15:16). Once we believe in Jesus Christ, we become the children of God (John 1:12). The love of the Father for His children is unconditional (Jeremiah 31:3), and nothing can separate us from His love.

God's love shares our pain (Psalm 34:18). When Jesus was dying on the cross and nails were driven into His hands, God was also in great pain but let the process continue; it was the only way to save us. Sometimes we experience severe, painful trials, and we pray that they will stop. God hurts together with us as He allows us to go through difficult ordeals, the only route that will change us and enable us to grow in Him (Psalm 23:4; Proverbs 3:11-12; Isaiah 63:9). As a loving parent, God our Father feels the pain when He disciplines His children and sees them suffer.

God's love protects us. When our prayers are not answered, we should not blame or resent God or it may lead us down the wrong path. I prayed to become a medical doctor; God refused my prayer. I prayed to go as a missionary to Vietnam; God said no to that prayer, too. He had a different path for my life. God does not forget us or forsake us (Isaiah 49:14-16). His protecting love also gives us laws like the Ten Commandments, to keep us from going the wrong way. Let us respect God's love by obeying His commands (1 John 5:3-4).

God's love gives good things to us. A father in America donated one of his kidneys to his 16-year-old daughter suffering from kidney disease. Before long, her kidney was destroyed and she again needed a kidney. The father wanted to give his remaining kidney to his daughter. The doctor said it wasn't ethical because the father would die; it would be murder. But his love for his daughter transcended ethics, and he gave his remaining kidney to her and lived on a kidney dialysis machine until he died. God gave His son for us; Jesus was murdered on the cross. Did this violate the law? No, it was the great love of God transcending the law (Isaiah 53:5; Romans 5:8; Ephesians 3:17-19). Children cannot understand the love of parents; human beings cannot understand the extent of the immeasurable love of God for His children.

Heavenly Father, help us to increasingly understand the extent of Your love. Let us live as prisoners of Your love.
