Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
The Spiritual Meaning of Thanksgiving
Psalms 22:3

2001-11-18

We thank parents, teachers, and neighbors for the benefits we receive. But are we thankful when we experience pain or loss? The Bible tells us to be thankful always.

Complaining is a key the devil uses to enter our hearts. Satan planted dissatisfaction in Eve because she couldn't eat from the tree God said not to touch or she would die. Satan told her she wouldn't die, tempting her to gain more wisdom and be like God. Adam and Eve both sinned against God when they ate the fruit from that tree. While traveling the route to the Red Sea, the Israelites complained because they had no bread and water and didn't like the food they had. So, God sent venomous snakes among them (Numbers 21:4-6). It's not easy to cross the desert, but when God makes a covenant to care for His people, He becomes angry when they complain. Satan controls our hearts when we complain.

The spiritual meaning of thanksgiving is to sacrifice thank offerings honoring God (Psalm 50:23). Jehoshaphat tried a new tactic in his army when he appointed soldiers to sing to the Lord, giving thanks to God. A great miracle began to happen when they began to sing and give thanks; their enemies were defeated (2 Chronicles 20:20-23). When Paul and Silas were in prison praying and singing hymns to God, a violent earthquake shook the prison foundation, opened the doors, and everybody's chains came loose (Acts 16:25-26). Through the help of the Holy Spirit, we must train ourselves to give thanks and praise to God in all circumstances. Praise to God becomes the key to blessing.

We must give thanks to God and call upon Him in the day of trouble, and He'll deliver us (Psalm 50:14-15). We must guard our hearts and mouths and keep our tongues from evil (Proverbs 4:23; Psalm 34:13-14). Our mouths are made to give thanksgiving and praise to God (Philippians 4:6; Hebrews 13:15). A pastor's wife had cancer and constantly complained that it was her husband's fault, because she had to help him so much to be an effective pastor. Tired of her complaining, he said she could die complaining, or die being a thankful person. She made a list of all the people she wanted to thank. An amazing thing happened. The more people she thanked, the healthier she became. By the time she had thanked everyone on her list, she was completely healed of cancer! What will we choose to do . . . complain or follow God's will? His will for us is to be joyful always, pray continually, and to give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

Heavenly Father, we so easily complain; forgive us. Strengthen us and make us choose to give You thanks and praise and let the kingdom of heaven reign in our hearts and lives.
