The Lord¢¥s Prayer (2)
Matthew 6:9 ~ 6:13

2004-03-28

Introduction : There is priority and posteriority in everything we do. If we violate this order, we will face trouble. It is the same with prayer. We should pray first about God´s concerns and then for our desires. When our priorities are not in order, this is the reason why God does not answer many of our prayers. Last Sunday I told you about God´s concerns. Today let me tell you about our desires.

1. Give us today our daily bread.
    1) Our daily bread is the most basic requirement in our lives.
A theologian says that God does not care about our physical desires (Mt 7:9-11).
Our daily bread includes things such as health, education, houses, and jobs
    2) Ask God for blessings every day.
        (1) The life of Israel in the desert and manna (Ex 16:4).
        (2) God wants us to pray and believe every day (Ps 68:19; 88:9; 1 Co 2:9).
        (3) Asking for too much at a time comes from greed
            (Ex 16:20; Ps 106:14,15; Jas 4:2,3; 1 Pe 5:7).

2. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
    1) Forgiveness is the basic attitude of Christianity (Lk 23:34).
A legalist has no Cross (Mt 5:43,44).
Humankind can´t live without forgiveness, reconciliation, and love
        (Mt 18:35; Eph 4:32; 1 Pe 4:8).
    2) Humankind was made to live in the relationship of coexistence with his or her
neighbors. The relationship between God and me is established on that between
my neighbor and me (Col 3:12-14).

3. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
    1) Temptation is the bait of the devil.
If we are tempted, we are hooked by the devil (Jn 8:44; Pr 14:34).
Temptation always comes as bait for greed (Ge 3:4,5; Jn 13:2; Jas 1:15).
    2) David being tempted and his evil work after that (Ps 51:10-12).
    3) Reject the greed of temptation and resist the devil
        (1 Pe 5:8,9; Col 3:5,6; Lk 10:19; Jas 4:7; Gal 5:1).

Conclusion : When we finish praying, we should praise God. The kingdom of heaven, sovereignty, and glory belong to God. We must always worship Him and pray to Him.
