The Second Son´s Misunderstanding
Luke 15:11 ~ 15:24

2004-01-18

Introduction : The other day some friends went hunting, and they mistook one of their people in the trees for a wild boar and killed him with one shot. Although it was unintentional, their misunderstanding brought a terrible result. Adam´s misunderstanding also caused his fall. In other words, he misunderstood that he could become like God. As a result, his descendants today misunderstand, thinking that they are the masters of their lives, and they go through severe misfortune.

1. He tried to be the master like his father (Lk 15:11,12).
    1) He disliked serving his father (Mal 1:6).
    2) He disliked obeying his father (Isa 1:3,4).
    3) He disliked pleasing his father.
        - So did Adam (Ge 2:16,17; 3:17,19).

2. He mistook himself for the master (Lk 15:13).
    1) He was served by money (Ps 52:7; Pr 27:24).
    2) He was sold for money (Mt 6:24).
    3) He was flattered by money (1 Jn 2:15,16).

3. The broken dream (Lk 15:14-16).
    1) He faced a severe famine (Ps 105:16; Am 8:11,12).
    2) He went broke (Lk 15:30; Pr 23:5; Jn 10:10).
    3) No one served, obeyed, or flattered him.
    4) Hunger and cold (1 Ti 6:10).
    5) The humblest worker who fed pigs (Ps 49:20).
        - Adam discovered that he wasn´t able to solve the crisis in his life.

4. Realization (Lk 15:17-19).
    1) He realized that his father was the master (Isa 44:21; Ps 48:14).
    2) The love of his father, the master (1 Jn 3:1).
    3) The happiness of the servants who served his father, the master (Ps 37:19).
    4) He realized that he was not the master but also he wasn´t able to be (Job 25:5,6).
    5) Who was he? He was only one of the hired men (Pr 3:34).
    6) The son repented and returned (Lk 15:20; Isa 57:15; Jn 14:6).
        - We should recognize this fact (Isa 55:6,7; 1 Jn 1:9).

5. The father´s attitude toward the second son (Lk 15:20-24).
    1) Put the best robe on him (Jn 3:16; Col 3:9,10; 2 Co 5:17).
    2) Put a ring on his finger (2 Co 1:22).
    3) Put sandals on his feet (Jn 14:27).
    4) Kill the fattened calf for him (Lk 15:32; Pr 22:4; Ps 30:11).

Conclusion : When the second son misunderstood, he was lost and dead. However, when he became aware of this, he repented and returned, and he was revived and found.
