Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
The Valley of the Shadow of Death
Psalms 23:4

2001-10-05

Joy increases when we share it with others. Sadness decreases when we share it with others. It is physically and mentally difficult to go through life alone. Therefore, to live well we need someone to share our lives with us.

When we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we do not have to fear because God is with us. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve had everything they needed. They had no problems as long as they worshipped and obeyed God. Death did not even exist -until Adam disobeyed God and sinned - and Adam and Eve were driven out of the garden (Genesis 3:17-19). This valley of the shadow of death is what Adam brought upon us, where sin afflicts all of us (Romans 5:12; 3:23). Now the world is full of greed, killing, terrorist attacks, wickedness and danger (1 John 2:16). A survey of young men and women in Korea revealed one out of three are chronically depressed; one out of five need medical treatment for depression.

Someone is always with us in our valley of the shadow of death - our Lord Jesus Christ! He doesn't just send us knowledge from heaven. He is personally with us and tells us, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me"(John 14:1). Jesus wore the flesh of a human being and has already gone through the valley of the shadow of death (John 1:14). He now desires to be our fortress and haven, no matter how dark and frightful the valleys around us may be. He warned us that we would have trouble in this world. He also said, "But take heart! I have overcome the world"(John 16:33). He will not leave us as orphans (John 14:18). Although mental anguish and physical suffering may cloud our minds and hearts, Jesus wants to heal us through His grace (Isaiah 53:5).

The rod and staff of the Lord will guide and protect us. We can have complete confidence that the Lord is our strength, our shield, and our fortress (Psalm 28:7-9). Psalm 138:7 says, "Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes, with your right hand you save me." God is our unseen shepherd who is always with us, and the Bible is our rod and staff -our guidebook - which shows us how to face difficulties and suffering. Jesus has come through the valley of the shadow of death to bring us salvation. Jesus is with us forever . . . eternally. Let us confidently declare with the psalmist, "In my anguish I cried to the LORD, and he answered by setting me free. The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid"(Psalm 118:5-6).

Heavenly Father, we thank You that we will never be alone as we walk through the valley of the shadow of death because You are always with us. We have an eternal fortress in You.
