The Bitter Water Became Sweet
Exodus 15:22 ~ 15:25

2003-07-27

A summary of the events in Exodus 15:22-25.

1. The bitter water of sin
   1) Since Adam's fall, the bitter water of sin has filled the souls of humanity.
      (1) Humankind became God's enemy and was forsaken and lost (Isaiah 59:2,12).
      (2) People are full of the poison of death, and there is no peace (Romans 3:13-18).
   2) If we receive Jesus who was nailed on the Cross, the bitter water of sin is changed
into the sweet water of forgiveness, righteousness, and glory. We can meet God and find
       self (John 3:14,15; Luke 5:31,32).

2. The bitter water of hatred and anger
   1) The price of sin is death. Among the poison of death, there is the poison of hatred and
       anger.
   2) Hatred and anger destroys the self and others. Communism was a violent revolution,
which instigated hatred and anger between the haves and the have-nots
       (Prov. 27:4; John 8:44).
¡Ø Power came as a result of that hatred.
¨ç Stalin killed 20 million of his own people.
¨è Mao Tse-tung killed 40-50 million of his own people.
¨é How many of their own people have Kim Il Sung and Kim Jung Il killed?
   3) Our biggest problem is the one concerning our heart and mind. We drink from the bitter
water gushing from within us and suffer from it (1 John 3:15).
      (1) On the Cross, Jesus overcame hatred.
      (2) Deacon Stephen overcame hatred as well (Acts 7:59,60).
   4) When we embrace the Cross in our hearts, the bitter water of hatred and anger is        changed into the sweet water of love and reconciliation
       (Ephesians 4:32).

3. The bitter water of anxiety and fear
   1) When Adam sinned against God and hid, he felt fear for the first time (Genesis 3:8-10).
   2) Our lives are uncertain politically, economically, internationally, and environmentally,
which leads to anxiety and fear.
   3) Since there is a limit to human ability, there is anxiety.
      - People have the bitter water of anxiety and fear in their hearts existentially (Job 3:25).
   4) If we embrace the cross of Jesus Christ in our hearts, the bitter water of anxiety and fear
will be sweetened through peace and certainty (1 Peter 2:9).
      (1) Become chosen (John 15:16)
      (2) Become like kings and serve God in life (Revelation 5:9,10)
      (3) The God of the Trinity resides and rules (1 John 4:4,15)
      (4) Become God's personal possession that He cares for personally (Psalm 91:1-7).

4. The bitter water of frustration and despair
   1) The frustration and despair Adam felt when driven from Eden (Genesis 3:16-19).
      (1) The land was cursed
      (2) Prophesy of conflict between man and wife
      (3) The body becomes ill and dies
      (4) Hatred and murder within a family
         - Such bitter water is passed down from generation to generation.
   2) People are desperate beings existentially.
      (1) The desperate sinner
      (2) The emptiness of life
      (3) The despair of death
         - They live with the bitter water of frustration and despair in their hearts.
   3) Jesus prevailed over such despair.
      (1) The despair of death on the cross of Calvary (Matthew 27:46)
      (2) The hope of the morning of resurrection (1 Peter 1:3,4)
         - Dr. Moltmann's experience and the theology of hope
   4) The death on the Cross and resurrection turns all the bitter water of frustration and
despair into sweet water (Romans 8:2; 8:33-39).

The bitter water in every generation has been changed and sweetened through the cross of Jesus Christ. Can people drink from the bitter water gushing from the heart day by day and not suffer from hatred, anger, anxiety, fear, frustration, and despair? Only the cross of Jesus can sweeten the bitter water of the heart.
