Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
Two Kinds of Storms
Luke 8:22 ~ 8:39

2001-09-20

On the ship of life, we sail out to sea and face many dangers.

There is the spiritual and mental storm. In Luke 8 we read about the violent, demon-possessed man from the Gerasenes who was shocked spiritually and mentally until he was no longer able to function as a normal person in society. Satan uses this type of mental illness to disable people. Jesus commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man and he was completely cured and in his right mind.

Another kind of storm we encounter on the sea of life is the physical storm. Jesus and His disciples were in a boat on the Sea of Galilee going over to the other side of the lake when a storm suddenly arose. The disciples were afraid they were going to drown while Jesus slept peacefully. They woke up Jesus and were amazed when He rebuked the wind and told the waves to be still and it became completely calm (Mark 4:39). Jesus Christ has all power and He rebuked the force causing the storm.

When we have storms in our lives, we must look at them through our spiritual eyes and recognize what is driving the physical storm. Last week on September 11 there was a terrorist attack on America in New York and at the Pentagon, causing great tragedy and shaking America's very existence. September 14 was a day of prayer and remembrance in America, and although we may say that America is declining spiritually, many Americans went to church in tears and prayed. When tragedy occurs, they call out to God. President Bush read Psalm 23:4 to the nation. With the President confessing such faith and courage in God, there must be victory. God answers the prayers of people who acknowledge and depend on Him. Terrorism is the work of Satan; it is wicked, evil, and destroys innocent lives. Before this physical storm (attack), an evil satanic storm was stirring among terrorists. This is not America's war; it is Yahweh's war. Jesus was victorious over Satan before He went into public ministry. We must prepare ourselves before physical storms come, by putting on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-17; 1 Peter 5:8-9; James 4:7). We must win the spiritual war or we'll lose the physical war. We must confess the powerful Word of God that can do great miracles, and we can be filled with hope (Mark 16:17-18). Even though we may experience great physical destruction, a spiritual battle must be waged and a spiritual victory will result. It will be won through the resurrection power of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus Christ who has overcome evil and can drive away
all storms. May we experience His calm and peace in our hearts and minds
