Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
What a Wretched Man I Am!
Romans 7:18 ~ 7:25

2003-06-22

¢ÅA confession of an alcoholic - "No matter how much I try to abstain through effort and resolution, I cannot overcome the incredible temptation and merciless craving."
¢ÅThe torment of a drug addict - "I do not even have the mind or will to resist the evil urge of drugs. My life is a slave and a toy to drugs."
Such confessions are extreme examples of those enslaved by Satan's temptations. However, all humanity must agree to the conscientious confession of the apostle Paul * (Romans 7:18-24).

1. The curse called "I"

  - In Romans 7, the word "I" is used many times. In other words, "I" laments the wretched
helplessness of self under the yoke of the Law and sin. What is the reality concerning "I"?
  1) Adam's fall was without doubt total depravity, which brought corruption even beyond the
      possibility of restoration.
        - Restoration impossible even through his own power, training, penance, and effort.
  2) After Adam, each person was born to the corruption of sin and naturally became a servant
      to Satan from the beginning.
3)When self-ego is at the center
     (1) Impossible to prevail over sin and Satan
     (2) Lacks the strength to carry out the desire of the heart
        - Greater effort only leads to greater certainty that self is a wretched sinner
     (3) Though a person may appear "clean" through the human effort of fasting or practicing
asceticism, he or she is just a vessel containing that which decays, the flesh being nothing
          more than a whitewashed tomb.

2. Christ's victory

  1) Christ did not inherit Adam's fall and corruption - Not being of Adam's seed, but was born
       through the Holy Spirit.
  2) Life free of greed - Evidenced through a temptation in the desert
  3) The redemption on the Cross and restoration for the descendants of Adam (Romans 7:1-6)
  4) Brought to life with Christ (Romans 6:3-11)

3. A person born of water and of the Spirit

  1) Nicodemus - A religious man, a teacher, a man of status and honor, respected by others
     (1) A man with his ego at the center of his heart
     (2) A servant to Satan and sin from birth
(3)A man living according to the will and greed of his heart and flesh (Ephesians 2:2,3)
  2) A person reborn
     (1) One who repents and is forgiven through the Blood
     (2) One who has accepted Jesus as Savior (Colossians 2:11-15)
        - Freedom from Satan and sin, and the greed of the heart and flesh.
  3) One who has Christ at the center of his or her heart (Romans 8:1,2; Galatians 2:20)

Apostle Paul lamented, "What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?" In a never-ending battle in his heart between his desire to serve God and the sin that lay within his flesh, Paul lamented with an injured conscience about the ever-defeated ego.
However, the answer to his lament came quickly. He wrote, "Thanks be to God-through Jesus Christ our Lord!" The victory in our lives does not come through such a battle, but by trusting in Jesus Christ who is within each one of us.
