Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
I Will Not Leave You As Orphans
John 14:16 ~ 14:20

2003-06-08

Becoming an orphan is truly terrifying and distressful.
- Story of a widow with a lung disease who sent her children to an orphanage -
Christ's disciples greatly feared becoming "orphans" after the departure of Jesus Christ from this world.

1. Who is the Holy Spirit?

  1) The Holy Spirit is also called the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Jesus Christ
      (Romans 8:9; 1 Peter 1:11)
      (1) Christ stated that those who saw Him also saw God     * (John 14:7-11)
      (2) Those who experience the Holy Spirit have experienced Jesus
            - Another comforter, the Holy Spirit    * (John 14:16)
            - The difference between "alos" and "heteros"
      (3) The Trinity God
            - God through Christ, Christ through the Holy Spirit is revealed and works.
God and Christ work in our lives through the Holy Spirit   * (John 15:26)
            - Four thousand years of the Old Testament period belonged to God, the
Father; the first 33 years of the New Testament period belonged to Christ,
God the Son; following Pentecost, it has been the period of the Holy Spirit.
  2) The Holy Spirit is the "Paracletos, Comforter."
        - He teaches, reminds, scolds, guides, comforts, encourages, and strengthens us.
          (Romans 8:26; John 14:26; 16:13)

2. The experience of the Holy Spirit

  1) The experience of the Holy Spirit in rebirth
      (1) A Jewish teacher, Nicodemus, who sought Jesus     * (John 3:3-7)
            - Those of the flesh are dead in spirit
      (2) The meaning of being reborn
            - Through the revelation of the Holy Spirit, to realize that Jesus is Lord and
               Christ and to accept Him
            - The Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of Christ comes into our beings as the Spirit of
               eternity   * (Corinthians 3:16)
      (3) Those born in God     * (John 1:12,13)
  2) The experience of the power of the Holy Spirit - Baptism of the Holy Spirit     * (Acts 1:4-5,8)
      (1) Experienced by the disciples at Pentecost
           - 50 days after Christ's resurrection   * (Acts 2:1-4)
      (2) Experienced by the Samaritans    * (Acts 8:13-19)
      (3) Experienced at the home of Cornelius     * (Acts 10:44-48)
      (4) Experienced by the Ephesus Church     * (Acts 19:6,7)

3. The gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit

  1) The gifts of the Holy Spirit - The manifestation of God's supernatural powers
      * (1 Corinthians 12:8-11; Romans 12:6-8)
  2) The fruits of the Holy Spirit - Fundamental change in character     * (Galatians 5:22-26)

Following Pentecost, it has been the period of the Holy Spirit. Without receiving the revelation by the Holy Spirit, no one can call Jesus as Christ or Savior. Because the Holy Spirit came, we can call God "Abba Father." By being reborn in the Holy Spirit and serving as we lead our lives in faith through the Holy Spirit, we will undergo fundamental changes in our character, and we will be resurrected and taken to heaven.
