The LORD Grants Sleep to Those He Loves
Psalms 127:1 ~ 127:2

2001-09-11

Our future is unknown; we can't predict success or failure. No one but God can know how things will turn out. Proverbs 16:9 says, "In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps." Our first step toward success is to know God and live according to His ways-not ours.

"Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain?(Psalm 127:1). Many people work hard building a house-a life of success-but they don't succeed. Why? They build their house according to mere human ideas, plans and efforts. To be successful, we must build according to God's pattern (His Word) and by His Spirit. In Genesis, we read about Jacob's problems when he tried to build a successful life. He cheated his brother out of his birthright, deceived his aged father, had to flee for his life, worked for his uncle for 14 years without wages and another six years tending his uncle's flocks, and he was still unsuccessful . . . until He allowed God to intervene and prosper his flocks. By faith, we must always look to Jesus and depend upon Him for success in our lives (Hebrews 11:1; 12:2; 1 Corinthians 2:9).

"Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain"(Psalm 127:1). Building a city is easier than guarding it. After the 1988 Seoul Olympics, we had a great economic fall beginning in 1997. Daewoo fell overnight just as many other companies failed. When people don't let God guard them, success is to no avail. Even though we've paid off the IMF debt, we are once again heading toward economic crisis and complete moral decay . . . unless people turn to God and righteousness. Jacob's life prospered and was spared-only because God was guarding and watching over him (Deuteronomy 8:16-18; Isaiah 41:14-16).

"He grants sleep to those He loves"(Psalm 127:2). The Lord invites us to go to Him and He will give us rest-if we take His yoke upon us (Matthew 11:28-30). In Palestine when they tilled the land, the yoke was on the mother cow and the calf was simply under the mother who did all the work. That's what Christ meant when He said, "Take my yoke upon you and you'll find rest." His yoke is easy when we are under it because He does all the work, taking the yoke of sin, suffering and sickness. To go under His yoke we must be gentle, humble, and submissive so He can take the whole yoke and do all the work (Jeremiah 7:23; 29:11-13; Psalm 37:11; 1 Peter 5:5-6). "He grants sleep (peace) to those He loves"(Psalm 127:2; John 16:33).

Heavenly Father, help us to be humble, gentle, and submissive under Your yoke
and depend completely upon You and be blessed.
