The Lord Is My Shepherd (Part 4)
Psalms 23:6

2003-04-27

We cannot confidently say that we know our spouses, even though we have lived with them all of our lives. We cannot say that we know God who is infinite and eternal. However, through Jesus who came as a man, we can vaguely understand God. When Philip asked Jesus to reveal God to him, Christ said in John 14:9, "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father?'" God revealed through the life of Jesus is one of benevolence and mercy. There is more hint of God in Psalm 23:6.

The Lord is the shepherd of goodness and mercy. In Luke 10:30-37 we read about a man on his way to Jericho from Jerusalem who met a band of robbers. He was beaten, stripped of his clothes, and left half dead. A high priest only scolded him and accused him of carelessness. A Levite couldn't help him because he could only perform religious ceremonies. Then a Samaritan, symbolic of Jesus the shepherd of goodness and mercy, looked at the man who was dying and took care of him. Jesus is the good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep (John 10:10,11).

Christ on the Cross is the image of God. God had pity upon sinners (2 Corinthians 5:21). He did not judge us through the Law, but through Christ on the Cross (Ephesians 2:1-7; 1 Peter 2:25). Oh, the goodness of Christ, the goodness of God! Sheep are so weak and have no homing instinct like birds. They cannot return home by themselves. So Jesus Christ our Shepherd came and freed us from the world and from Satan (Romans 8:1,2) and bestows holiness and the Holy Spirit upon us (John 14:17). We can only live a holy life with the ability and power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus heals and encourages us (Matthew 4:23; John 16:33) and blesses us (2 Corinthians 8:9). He provides heaven for us - our eternal home (2 Peter 3:12,13; Revelation 7:15-17).

The Lord provides us eternal residence in His house. All must die; none can avoid death. Christians will die once, but the unsaved will die twice - a physical death and a spiritual death (Matthew 10:28). Christ has taught us about spiritual immortality and heaven (1 Thessalonians 4:14-17). The tunnel of death is natural and for the Christian, it leads to heaven (John 14:1-3). Death is no longer something to fear because we will be with Jesus (Revelation 3:20,21). In 2 Corinthians 5:1,8-10 and in 1 Corinthians 15:42-54 Paul taught about the immortality of the soul and heaven (Philippians 1:21-23). John the apostle described an image of the holy heaven (Revelation 21:1-7; 22:1-5). Psalm 23 teaches that after living on earth with the help of our Good Shepherd, our lives on earth will end, and we will live eternally with God in our heavenly home!

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus Christ the Good Shepherd to bring us back into the fold.
