The Lord Is My Shepherd (Part 3)
Psalms 23:5

2003-04-06

The war in Iraq seems to be facing the final stage. Iraq and many Islamic countries seem to have become America's enemies. Although we may not desire it, we face enemies big and small. God said that we would have enemies even among our own family members. However, when we serve and trust God as our Shepherd, He promised to provide the solutions to our problems regarding our enemies (Psalm 23:5).

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. King Saul and the Israelite army had lost all morale before Goliath and the Philistine army (1 Samuel 17:4-24). David, 17 or 18 years old, brought food to his three brothers on the battlefield and saw King Saul and the Israelites shivering in fear. David had unwavering faith in the living God and told King Saul he would fight Goliath (1 Samuel 17:32,34-36,37). Goliath expected a hero to challenge him, not a young man without armor. But David came against Goliath "in the name of the LORD Almighty"(1 Samuel 17:45-47). He slew the giant Goliath (Numbers 14:9). God had prepared a feast table for David to become king. When we confess our faith in the power of God, our Shepherd prepares our enemies as a feast for us, as a springboard to our greatness (Mark 11:22,23).

You anoint my head with oil. Having one's head anointed with oil means to be uplifted and glorified by God. Our enemies become our "food" as God anoints us. David became a hero and the king of Israel. Christ was crucified by His enemies (Acts 2:23), but then His name was spread throughout the world as Savior, the King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords (Acts 2:32,33,36). When the Holy Spirit is present, suffering turns to glory. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Resurrection, the Spirit of Glory, our Counselor or the One Who Helps; He stays with us. We have all been anointed (1 Peter 4:14). He is the Holy Spirit of Genesis (Genesis 1:2), the Holy Spirit of rebirth - the new creation (1 John 4:15; 2 Corinthians 5:17), and the Holy Spirit in life, resurrection, and glory (Romans 8:11,18). He loves us like a mother who embraces us and takes care of us.

My cup overflows (John 10:9,10). Our cups overflow when we know our identity in Christ. Who are we? We have been forgiven and made righteous (Romans 3:24). We have been made holy and are accompanied by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16; Galatians 4:6). We are healed (1 Peter 2:24) and have received the blessing of Abraham (Galatians 3:13,14). We have received resurrection, eternal life, and heaven (John 14:1-3). We can boldly proclaim who we are in Christ our Shepherd! We are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation - people who belong to God (1 Peter 2:9). Christ our Shepherd uses our enemies as opportunities for our growth and blessing.

Heavenly Father, thank You for turning our enemies into a table of blessing for us.
