Think of the Lord in Your Time of Distress
Jonah 2:5 ~ 2:7

2001-07-25

Life is full of hardship. As surely as fire burns upward, our lives will burn with distress and suffering. Even Jesus Christ went through great times of distress when He was on this earth. Hardship brings an opportunity to call out to our risen and victorious Lord, to meditate on His Word, and to think deeply about Him in our times of distress.

The Lord will provide (Yahweh Yir'eh). God provided a sacrifice for Abraham when He saw that this obedient father was willing to offer his only son to Him (Genesis 22:12-14). God has compassion on us and provides us with His mercy (Psalm 103:13-14; Hebrews 2:18; 1 Corinthians 2:9). When I was an elementary student I saw a dragonfly on a rice stalk struggling to come out of a cocoon. I tried to help by splitting the cocoon open, but later I saw that the dragonfly was dead. I didn't know it needed to struggle to develop muscles and allow oil to cover its wings so it could fly. Through struggles and hardship, we can mature and develop spiritual muscles and grow stronger in faith. God always provides a way out of hardship because His name is Yahweh Yir'eh.

The Lord is my banner (Yahweh Nissi). The Israelites were not trained for war and could not defeat the Amalekites. But when Moses prayed and kept his arms raised in prayer, symbolic of his dependence on and faith in God, the Israelites were victorious (Exodus 17:15-16). The Amalekites symbolize Satan who tries to destroy us. But God is our banner, our victory. He will fight for us; we need only to be still (Exodus 14:13-14).

The Lord is my peace (Yahweh Shalom). Peace without strength is meaningless. Because God is of great strength, we can have peace. He is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient. He is our fortress, refuge, and our shield (Psalm 91:2-12). What we choose to believe becomes the seed of our future. Negative thinking results in negative circumstances. Thinking positively becomes the seed for positive circumstances and God will deliver us. Distress may come at us like a storm, but the Lord will rescue us.

The Lord is my shepherd (Yahweh Roi). He is our guide. We do not have to be afraid, because we are His and He is ours (Isaiah 43:1). Because He loves us, He will rescue us, protect us, and be with us in trouble (Psalm 91:13-16). Distress is not a joyful event (James 1:2-3), but through it we can develop perseverance and have peace because God is our fortress, our banner. Man could not help Jonah when a great fish swallowed him (Jonah 2:5-7), but God rescued him. The Lord will also rescue us in our times of distress.

Heavenly Father, we cannot avoid distress great or small. Help us to look to You and see Your army ready to fight for us, so we can overcome all hardship through Jesus Christ.
