Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
The Lord Is My Shepherd (Part 1)
Genesis 23:1 ~ 23:3

2003-03-23

New Zealand has more sheep than people. There is no need for a shepherd, because the whole nation is a green pasture, and there are no predatory animals. Israel, however, has a lot of desert land where water is precious, and there are predatory animals. To survive, sheep need a shepherd's help to find green pastures and water and to guard and protect them day and night. We are like the sheep in Israel, in a world like a dangerous desert, and Satan is always trying to assault us. To survive, we need the protection and guidance of a shepherd. The Bible tells us in Psalm 23, "The Lord is my shepherd." That shepherd is Jesus (John 10:11-15). How does this shepherd watch out for us?

He makes me lie down in green pastures. What blessings can we receive in these green pastures? We can receive the forgiveness of sins, righteousness, and holiness through Christ's sacrifice on the Cross (1 Peter 3:18; Romans 3:25; 1 Corinthians 6:11). He has provided healing for us (Exodus 15:26; 1 Peter 2:24), well-being (Galatians 3:13,14), and the green pastures of eternal life and heaven (2 Corinthians 5:1).

He leads me beside quiet waters. When we are thirsty for joy, happiness, and peace in life, the Holy Spirit is the stream of living water that will quench our thirst when we experience the kingdom of God (Romans 14:17). Jesus pours out on us the living water of righteousness (Titus 3:6,7), the living water of peace (John 14:27), and the living water of joy (Psalm 16:11). Only the living water of the Holy Spirit can quench our thirst (John 4:14; Isaiah 44:3; 12:3). He will also provide the water of wine-symbolizing great joy, and milk-depicting great nourishment (Isaiah 55:1).

He restores my soul. When we are tired, we can recover with rest and nourishment. Elijah was exhausted due to his contest with Baal when Baal's altar and priests were destroyed. Elijah wanted to die. However, twice the angel of the Lord touched him and told him to get up and eat and drink, and he was strengthened by that food (1 Kings 19:1-8). Through prayer, (Isaiah 57:15), the Holy Spirit causes us to relax, to sleep, and to be restored (Philippians 4:6,7). Eating the bread of God's Word will also resuscitate us (Psalm 107:19,20; 119:25; John 6:35).

He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Christ raised us from death due to iniquity and sin (Ephesians 2:1-6). Now we can wear the garment of a new person because we are new creations through the Cross (Ephesians 4:22-24). Jesus changed our corrupted sinful nature (Romans 6:6), and we have become new creations in Him (Romans 8:1-4). Our Shepherd wants to guide and protect us for His glory.

Heavenly Father, help us to obey You and to enjoy Your green pastures.
