Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
Take Off the Grave Clothes and Let Him Go
John 11:40 ~ 11:44

2003-02-16

The most important thing for a person is to be free from oppressive restriction and enjoy freedom and human rights. In a zoo, we can see animals held captive in cages. Although they are fed three times a day and well cared for, they are unfortunate; they have been deprived of their right to enjoy freedom. Christ came to this world to free us from spiritual death and to help us reclaim true spiritual freedom and human rights.

Bound from birth. Human beings were originally free and liberated beings. We were made in God's own image. We were His masterpiece, created for His glory (Genesis 1:26-28; Isaiah 43:7). Through the fall of Adam and Eve, sin entered the world and caused the human race to become prisoners to sin, Satan, worldliness, disease, the curse, poverty, death, and hell (John 8:34; Titus 3:3; Ecclesiastes 5:15-17). It is deeply ingrained within our subconscious that we are sinful people, living the lives of slaves.

Christ-given freedom. "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free"(Galatians 5:1). Jesus proclaimed the Gospel to give us back our original rights in God (Luke 4:18,19). He became a sacrifice on the Cross to cancel the debt of human beings (1 John 2:2; Ephesians 1:7; Galatians 4:6,7). God has freed us from sin and suffering (Matthew 8:17). A Korean missionary gave birth in poor hospital facilities in an undeveloped country. Both the baby and mother were suffering from the effects of childbirth. The mother listened to my sermon tape recorded ten years earlier. After I prayed for the sick, I said that God had healed someone suffering from childbirth. Through faith, the missionary mother and her baby were both healed! We were born slaves, but Christ freed us (Galatians 3:13,14; Hebrews 2:14,15; Romans 6:22).

Take off the grave clothes and let him go. Although Lazarus walked out of his tomb, he was still covered in grave clothes; he was not yet free. Christ said, "Take off the grave clothes and let him go (John 11:43,44). We are new creations in Christ . . . free beings, liberated from death (2 Corinthians 5:17). We have a new identity (John 8:32; 2 Corinthians 3:17). Many Christians do not realize that Christ has provided a holistic salvation for us, even while living on this earth. Be free spiritually; be free materially; be free physically. This is not a partial salvation; it is a holistic salvation (3 John 1:2). Untie the knots of sin and death. Untie the knots of poverty and disease. Take off the grave clothes of sadness and suffering. Through prayer, you must ask God to free you (Matthew 18:18,19). Call out to Him so these knots can be untied. Put off your old self and put on your new self-the new clothes of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:22-24).

Heavenly Father, help us to take off the grave clothes of sin, death, poverty, disease, sadness, and suffering, and put on the new clothes of freedom and blessing.
