Christ¡¯s Healing and Grace
Matthew 8:1 ~ 8:4

2003-01-26

All parents punish their children when they misbehave. However, no parent would inflict the kind of punishment that would cause serious illness. As God's children, He also punishes us for our wrongdoing, but He does not punish us by making us suffer from a terrible illness. God's love for His children surpasses the love of every parent in the world (Matthew 7:9-11).

The will of Jesus about disease. Many people question whether healing is the will of God. Yes! Christ desires divine healing for us. The leper asked Jesus if He were willing to make him clean. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean! Immediately he was cured of his leprosy" (Matthew 8:1-4). Christ considers forgiveness and healing one and the same (Matthew 9:1-8), like one coin with two sides. His ministry always included miracles of healing (Matthew 8:14-17). Healing is an indispensable part of the Gospel (Matthew 10:7,8; Luke 10:8,9).

The grace of healing and redemption. Christ died on the Cross for our redemption and healing. We can read this prophecy in Isaiah 53:4,5,10. We must not forget the benefits of forgiveness and healing (Psalm 103:1-3). Peter spoke of forgiveness and healing at the same time (1 Peter 2:24). We must believe and preach about both. Otherwise, we're only telling about half of God's work on the Cross. James wrote in his letter to the churches, "Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed" (James 5:15,16).

Biblical methods of healing. Jesus said to lay hands on sick people and if they believed in Him, they would get well (Mark 16:17,18). The disciples preached that people should repent, they anointed sick people with oil, and the sick were healed (Mark 6:12,13). Also, the elders of the church who are stronger in faith prayed over sick people and anointed them with oil in the name of the Lord (James 5:14). God did extraordinary miracles through Paul and Peter (Acts 19:11,12; 5:15,16). Let us pray with faith until assurance and peace fill our hearts. When a cell leader's brother-in-law was hospitalized in the intensive care unit with cirrhosis of the liver, she prayed with faith over a handkerchief on behalf of his healing. She went to the hospital, placed it on his body and prayed again. That very day he was moved out of ICU to a normal patient's room. His recovery was so rapid that he was discharged from the hospital one week later! He is now in the province serving God and the Church. We can be certain that the illness we suffer is not from God. He desires that we be healed. With true repentance and devotion, let us pray in faith and receive Christ's healing and grace.

Heavenly Father, we pray that we may be free from sin and that we may be healed.
