Eight Blessings Toward Happiness (Part 1)
Matthew 5:1 ~ 5:12

2003-01-12

All of our lives we struggle to be happy. However, happiness can be as fleeting as a momentary ray of sunshine on a cold winter day. People think that happiness can only be achieved when material and circumstantial conditions are satisfied. But the foundation of true happiness starts with the mind. Christ spoke of eight virtues leading to eternal happiness. We will discuss four of these today.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Being poor means to empty one's mind and heart of greed. When Satan tempted Adam and Eve, they sinned due to greed and lost the Garden of Eden. Jesus did not have any greed or selfishness in His heart or mind, so Satan did not have any means to tempt Him. Jesus had the attitude and nature of a servant (Philippians 2:5-8). This is the attitude we need to enjoy heavenly peace and joy and resist temptation and evil (James 1:13-15).

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. To mourn means to grieve over our own weakness in relation to God's standard of righteousness and power. When we mourn and cry out to God so that our faith may become stronger or because we lack righteousness, God will work in us and comfort us (Psalm 34:18; 2 Corinthians 1:4). When people pray to God to be freed from drinking, smoking, and other bad habits, He will help them (Galatians 5:24). When people cry out to God because of weakness and illness, He will forgive their sins and heal their diseases (Psalm 103:3-5). People who call out to God will be freed from their poor and weary lives of bondage and oppression (Psalm 128:1,2; Matthew 11:28).

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. The meek are humble and submissive before God; they obey with gentle minds and hearts. Sheep are typically meek animals, neither aggressive nor defensive. They require constant protection-a strong shepherd to take care of them. People who are meek love their neighbors, are modest, and they trust and obey God. The meek allow God to be their Shepherd, and they will inherit the earth (Psalm 23:1,2; 37:7-11; John 10:29; 1 John 4:4).

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. We struggle against the sins of our physical nature (Romans 7:18-24) and cannot satisfy the requirement of the law because of the weakness of the flesh (Romans 8:3,4). Only God can do this; we are justified through faith alone (Romans 5:1). We become a new person in Christ when the spiritual man overcomes sin through the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:1,2). When we hunger and thirst for righteousness, we will be filled.

Heavenly Father, help us experience true happiness by loving You and obeying Your Word.
