Do Not Be Deceived
Jonah 2:7 ~ 2:10

2001-07-10

Jonah was a prophet whom God called to preach in the foreign city of Nineveh. But he disobeyed God, tried to run away from Him and was swallowed by a great fish. He prayed and knew his prayer of repentance would save him. But his five senses told him he was doomed to die; he was in the stomach of a great fish. Yet his faith in God encouraged him that somehow he could be rescued, and God spared his life when the fish vomited him on dry land (Jonah 2:10).

Things that are false and vain deceive many people. Two kinds of knowledge are always in conflict: our knowledge and senses, compared to the truth of the Bible. For example, when one of our elders had inoperable cancer, knowledge and his senses told him he would die; the Bible told him of God's healing provision (Exodus 15:26). He chose to believe God's Word and God healed him! Darwin's theory of evolution says that all life began in the ocean as an amoeba - a lie! The Bible says that God created the world and all things in it (Job 38:2-4). Some say there is no life after death; that is false. There is a spiritual world after death (Hebrews 9:27-28). Some say all religions lead to God and salvation; we can be saved only>/i>through faith in Jesus Christ (John 14:6; Acts 4:12).

There is always an encounter between Jesus (truth) and the devil (a liar). The devil tells us we will always be vile sinners, doomed, and unrighteous. But Jesus says we can be free from sin and become holy and righteous in Him (Titus 3:5-7). The devil says man is destined to sadness and illness. But Jesus drives out spirits and heals the sick (Matthew 8:16-17). The devil says man is destined to misery because of the curse. But Jesus overcame the curse and gives us salvation and freedom from the curse and His grace makes us rich in Him (1 Corinthians 15:2-4; 2 Corinthians 8:9). We must not listen to the lies and falsehoods of Satan.

What is our counter plan? What should we do? We must have the promises of God's Word in our minds and hearts so we can stand firm on the ground of faith and not be deceived by the lies of Satan (Galatians 3:1). It is for freedom that Christ has set us free (Galatians 5:1). Though Abraham was about 100 years old and his senses told him that it was impossible for him and Sarah to have a son, he had faith in God, was persuaded God had power to keep His promise, and God gave them a son (Romans 4:19-22). Faith does not come from scientific knowledge or from our senses; faith comes from faith in God and from the knowledge of His Word (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).

Heavenly Father, help us not to be deceived by relying on knowledge and our senses.
Help us rely firmly on the truth of Your Word, which is unchanging and eternal.
