Glory Blooms from Hardship
2 Corinthians 4:17

All of us like roses, the queen of flowers, but we don't like the thorny stems that hold up the roses. Needless to say, we can't have a rose without a thorny stem. We all like success and glory in life. However, success and glory are the roses that bloom on thorny stems and bushes. A small thorny bush produces a small flower of glory; a large thorny bush produces large flowers of glory (2 Corinthians 4:17).

The hardship and glory of Daniel and his three friends. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow down to the image of gold King Nebuchadnezzar made in Babylon. So he had them thrown into a furnace heated seven times hotter than usual. Then the king saw four people walking in the fire unharmed! God had sent His angel, and His glory was revealed. The king's heart was turned toward God (Daniel 3:28-30). Daniel prayed only to God, even though King Darius decreed that all should bow down to him. Daniel was thrown into the den of lions. But God rescued him by closing the mouths of the lions; his life was spared (Daniel 6:26-28). Hardship makes us suffer, but through hardship, our lives grow and develop, and the glory of God shines forth.

The hardship and glory of Christ. He suffered from the pain of abandonment by the crowd and disciples even though He had taught them, healed them, and blessed them (John 19:6,12; Matthew 26:56). Christ suffered indescribable pain and spiritual hardship on the Cross (Matthew 27:46). He took the nature of a servant, humbled himself, and became obedient to death. God gave Him exceedingly great glory (Philippians 2:5-11; Isaiah 52:13-15).

When we face hardship (Romans 5:3,4). Everyone faces hardship - some lesser, some greater. We must not grumble against God as the Israelites did (1 Corinthians 10:10,11). Hardship is the food in the menu of our lives to make us stronger. Job did not resent God even amid great hardship, but humbly accepted it as God's will (Job 1:20-22; 23:10). Job received even greater blessing in the latter part of his life (Job 42:12-17). God allows hardship to train us and make us grow (Psalm 119:67). We must be broken like Jacob, who became like a helpless worm, depending entirely upon God (Isaiah 41:14,15). We must learn obedience to Him (Hebrews 5:8,9) and be changed into His likeness (2 Corinthians 4:17). Hope and glory are brought forth out of hardship (Psalm 91:15; Romans 8:35-38). During the storms of life, our attitudes will determine whether we are destroyed or whether our lives will bloom with great glory. For the flower of glory to bloom, we must be patient, disciplined, and changed. Then God will come to our rescue, and we will receive His glory in our lives.

Heavenly Father, may hardship-the seeds of glory-continue to bloom into everlasting fruit in our lives in 2003.
