Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
The Faith of Abraham
Romans 4:16 ~ 4:25

2002-12-22

Abraham didn't graduate from Harvard or Princeton or even from Tokyo or Seoul National University. He was not a descendent of a great scholarly family. His father sold idols in Ur. Abraham was a simple shepherd who did not even attend elementary school. Yet, no one had greater influence on human civilization. He is called the father of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the source of today's western civilization. The Bible calls him the father of our faith. How can Abraham's faith be described?

His faith in the eternal God of creation (Romans 4:17). Abraham believed in God who brings the dead to life (Hebrews 11:17-19). He believed in the God of Elijah who brought the son of a widow back to life (1 Kings 17:17-24) and in the God of Elisha who brought a boy back to life (2 Kings 4:17-37). Christ told Lazarus to come out of the tomb after three days. To God, there is no future or past but only the present-time eternal (Hebrews 1:10-12; 13:8). Therefore, to accept the future we must dream of it, seeing things as if they were, even though there is no evidence of them. This requires dreams and hope (Ephesians 3:20). God taught Abraham the principle of envisioning so that he could accept future events as having occurred now (Genesis 13:14; 15:6).

His faith even amid hopelessness (Romans 4:18). Abraham was optimistic and hopeful and had faith in God's absolute goodness. God is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, and He rules the destiny and history of mankind (Habakkuk 2:20; 3:16-19). God puts hope in our hearts. Although situations may be hopeless in human terms, there is always hope in God (1 Corinthians 2:9; Jeremiah 33:3). Abraham lived in faith and in obedience to the Word of God, trusting the covenants of God (Hebrews 11:1; Romans 10:17). Faith comes through hearing and hearing through the Word of God.

His continued spiritual victory. Abraham experienced conflict between his rationale and his faith (Romans 4:19; Hebrews 10:38). At age 100, Abraham's knowledge told him it was impossible for he and Sarah to have a child. Would God keep His covenant and give them a son? Abraham couldn't wait and had a child with a maidservant. He had a conflict between the power of God and his faith (Romans 4:21; Hebrews 11:11,12). But finally Abraham's faith overcame his conflict, and Abraham and Sarah had a son just as God had promised.

People have doubts when it takes a long time to receive answers to prayer. But "those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith" (Galatians 3:9).

Heavenly Father, help us to be like Abraham and choose to have faith in You and be blessed.
