Pastor Cho's Sermon Outline - Yoido Full Gospel Church - Seoul, Korea
Oh! The Cross
Galatians 2:20

2002-12-01

Today we put a cross on the tower of the church, on the wall behind the pulpit in the church, and wear a beautifully decorated cross as jewelry. However, a cross has not always been an image of beauty. In the Roman age, the cruelest criminal was hung on a cross to die. Once crucified, the criminal died slowly, shedding blood, in the most extreme pain for three to seven days. What an awful punishment it was! Since Jesus died on the Cross to redeem us, it became a symbol of the grace of salvation. Yet, we must not forget that a cross was an instrument of execution.

Everyone has a cross, even me. A Christian daughter-in-law may suffer because of Buddhist in-laws, but God will give the grace of salvation. A husband may suffer because of his wife. If so, his wife is his cross. Spouses should try to win each other more by their behavior than by their words (1 Peter 3:1). As a parent suffers because of a son or daughter but has compassion on the child, so the Lord will have compassion on those who fear Him (Psalm 103:13). All believers have a cross. We must allow it to produce the grace of Christ and salvation.

Jesus¡Ç cross. Jesus is the Creator of mankind (Isaiah 9:6). Fallen mankind is the cross of the Lord (Colossians 1:21; 1 John 4:10; John 1:29). Jesus came to the world to take up the Cross (John 3:14,15; Mark 10:45). He suffered for us (Isaiah 53:4-8). When Jesus suffered on the Cross, He was so lonely and was abandoned by His disciples and the crowd (Mark 15:29,30). His enemies mocked Him (Mark 15:31,32; Psalm 22:6). Even God abandoned Him, and He was in great despair (Mark 15:34). He had a ruptured heart and died after six hours (John 19:34; Psalm 22:14-16). He suffered and paid the debt for our sins so we could receive salvation and eternal life.

How should we bear our cross? A cross is given to us so that we may be blessed and changed and so that our neighbors, parents, husbands, wives, and superiors may be changed through us. Korea had many Christian martyrs in the past, but now we have 12 million Christians (John 12:24; 1 Peter 4:14-16). We have to die to our own desires so that others may have life in Christ. If we struggle and resist the cross, we will face mental and physical discord and trouble. If we daily embrace our cross with thankful hearts, the cross will feel lighter (1 Corinthians 15:31; Galatians 2:20; 2 Timothy 2:11).

The more we complain or try to avoid the cross in our lives, the more troubled and unhappy we will be. But if we are willing to accept the cross and die to self, resurrection life and grace will be upon us and our neighbors (2 Corinthians 4:11,12).

Heavenly Father, help us bear our cross so that we may receive Your blessings of resurrection life, and so that our families and neighbors will be blessed through us
