Lead Us Not into Temptation, but Deliver Us from the Evil One
Matthew 6:13

2002-11-24

When we face trouble in our Christian lives, we say that we are afflicted. The word afflicted has two meanings. First, God tests us. Just as athletes train hard to be strong physically, God makes us go through various trials so we can become strong Christians. He tests us to determine whether we deserve to be blessed or not. Second, the devil tempts us. Since he is evil by nature, he tries to make us commit sin and perish.

Lead us not into temptation. The devil tempted Adam who was supposed to protect the Garden of Eden. But he listened to the devil’s temptation (Genesis 3:4,5), Adam and Eve committed sin, and they became slaves to Satan. Jesus defeated the devil’s temptation. After Jesus had fasted 40 days and nights, the devil used hunger to tempt Jesus, urging Him to test God (Matthew 4:4). The devil used the lust of the eyes, urging Jesus to test God if He is the Son of God (Matthew 4:7). It’s a terrible sin to test God. The devil also used the fame and splendor of this world to tempt Jesus (Matthew 4:10). We are all exposed to the evil and corrupt ways of the devil.

How to overcome the devil’s temptation. We must protect ourselves with the Word of God (Colossians 2:7; Hebrews 4:12), and we must draw near to Him through prayer and the fullness of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:17,18). We must not let the devil tempt us through the Internet, TV, magazines, books, etc. (2 Corinthians 11:3). We need friends who are strong Christians (1 Corinthians 15:33,34). We must avoid a bad environment vulnerable to temptation (2 Peter 1:4), and resist the devil (Ephesians 6:11-13). We must attend church services, study the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16,17), pray continually (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18), fellowship with other Christians (Ecclesiastes 4:12), and evangelize and serve others (2 Timothy 4:2; 1 Peter 4:10,11).

Deliver us from the evil one. The evil one symbolizes the devil. He tries to harm us by putting evil thoughts in our minds and hearts (John 10:10). He condemns Christians, trying to bring false charges against us through others. Job was falsely accused (Job 1:9-11; 2:4,5). The devil gives wealth and power to those who serve him so they will conspire to do evil (Luke 4:5-7). He tries to inflict mental and physical sickness upon us. To overcome the devil, we must know the triumph of Jesus on the Cross (Colossians 2:15), the power of Jesus?precious blood (Revelation 12:10,11), the authority of believers (Luke 10:17-19), and resist the devil (1 Peter 5:8,9). We must pray with power and authority in the name of Jesus, “Deliver us from the evil one.?

Heavenly Father, lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Help us protect and cultivate our spiritual Garden of Eden—our minds and hearts.
