Looking Back on the Korean War
Matthew 5:38 ~ 5:48

Tomorrow marks the 51st anniversary (June 25, 1950-) when Kim Il-sung declared war and the North Korean Peoples Army invaded South Korea. None of us will ever forget the three year Korean War - a devastating conflict between Communist and non-Communist forces. South Korea and its UN Allies lost 770,000 soldiers; two million enemy soldiers were killed. Refugees numbered 3.2 million. Ten million family members were separated. Total property loss was estimated at 23 billion dollars. The indescribable loss and damage caused great sadness to all Koreans and to many around the world.

We must truly understand the realities of the divided motherland. North Korea is communist; South Korea is capitalistic. North Koreans live like slaves; South Koreans live in freedom and peace. North Korea denies the existence of God; South Korea has countless numbers of Christians and churches. Because of these extreme opposites, North Korea has no desire for unification. It is God's decision when North and South Korea will unify (Proverbs 21:31).

What should we do? We must avoid war. On the DMZ (demilitarized zone) there are many soldiers and weapons. If war breaks out, there is no place to hide and both North and South Korea would be completely destroyed. Our President Kim Dae-jung has introduced his Sunshine Policy to warm the cold hearts of the North Koreans, to bring together the separated families of the two Koreas, and to have ongoing communication and contacts with North Korea. Earlier this month North Korean cargo ships (unarmed) violated South Korea's territorial waters trying to provoke South Korea and disrupt the desire for unification. South Korea was wise and patient and did not respond with violence that would have hindered our ongoing negotiations with them. If we confront an evil man, we'll be harmed. If someone strikes us on one cheek, we should turn the other one to him also (Matthew 5:38-42).

We should be prosperous together. We need to strengthen our borders against North Korea, but we must not take revenge (Romans 12:17-21; Psalm 37:1-40). We hate the arms buildup and the policies of the North Korean Communist Party. But the North Korean people are not our enemies. An NGO within our church has been sending them food, medicine, and clothing. South Korea must help North Korea have a better understanding of the world. We must help them become competitive economically, form industrial complexes, earn money and have a better standard of living. We must pray and avoid war at all costs, and God will help us accomplish our dreams.

Heavenly Father, You have led us out of the ashes of the Korean War and our country has has prospered. Bless President Kim Dae-jung and his Sunshine Policy, and help the two Koreas to live in peaceful coexistence.
